Ilmtal-Radweg

The Thuringian four star cycling path ****

Welcome to the Ilmtal-Radweg - a 123 km experience showcasing the diversity of Thuringia. From the heights of the Thuringian Forest down to the wine-growing region of Saale-Unstrut, a unique combination of landscape and history awaits you. Ride along the river Ilm and enjoy the amazing Ilm Valley, Weimar and the Weimarer Land.

The Ilmtal-Radweg is a cycling route for nature lovers and culture enthusiasts. Right at the beginning, there is the Thuringian Forest Biosphere Reserve, an UNESCO World Heritage Site, with a pristine landscape of unique plants and animals. Follow the river Ilm on the way to that mouth into the river Saale. Pass through charming towns and lovable villages, gardens and parks, past castles and palaces as well as farm stores and orchards. A lot of lovely places are suitable to take a break or to romp on the playground. Sometimes you can even walk down to the water's edge, where there are wonderfully shady spots for a picnic or a refreshing footbath, especially in summer.

We recommend to plan 3 to 5 days, depending on your own pace, which is up to you. Therefore, the Ilmtal-Radweg is suitable for everyone who loves it relaxed and enjoyable, whether alone, as a couple, with family or friends. On mainly asphalt paths, the route goes steadily downhill and you roll relaxed through your own realm of curves.

The Ilm-Valley Cycling Route was the first to be recognised with 4 stars for being a quality cycling trail by the ADFC (German Cyclist’s Association). This means for the cyclists that they cannot only enjoy a picturesque landscape but also a high standard in terms of cycling-tracks’ trafficability, sign-posting, routeing, safety and service.
