From Weimar to Eberstedt | 25 km

The cycle path meanders through a beautiful landscape passing small villages the look of which is inspired by classical Weimar. The Maria-Pawlowna- Promenade connects the park of Tiefurt to that of Kromsdorf. There is a castle in Tiefurt as well as in Kromsdorf full of stories about Duchess Anna Amalias temple of the muses and about the Russian Grand Duchess and Grand Princess Maria Pawlowna’s sayings and doings.
In Denstedt, the mill and the castle above the Ilm River catch the eye. Near to the village, cyclists find a well equipped picnic area, offering a fine view on the scenery. After a visit to the Wieland Manor in Oßmannstedt you cycle on to Niederroßla and Zottelstedt. Here, it is worthwhile making a side trip to Apolda, famous not only for bell making but also for arts and fashionable knitwear. Passing Wickerstedt this stage ends in Eberstedt, where you can visit a historical oil mill.

Kromsdorf Palace and gardens (Schloß Kromsdorf)

About 1580, the Chamberlain of Weimar and Altenburg Georg Albrecht von Kromsdorf had built this picturesque Renaissance palace. From 1664 on, Baron Johan Theodor de Mortaigne had the park wall remodelled into an art object, unique in the European history of art, by having the wall decorated with 64 sandstone busts of historical and exotic personalities. Today, the castle houses not only the restaurant "Gutsschenke" with a wine shop, selling wines of the resident winery Prince zur Lippe, but also a law firm for traffic law. It’s also a venue for exhibitions and other events and offers space for theatre, cabaret and concerts in the former castle chapel.

Schloss Denstedt | Foto: Tanja Kozica
Castle of Denstedt (Schloß Denstedt)

The oldest parts of the castle on the western outskirts of Denstedt date back to the 13th century. With its Baroque onion dome the high, round donjon from the period before 1400 is one of the oldest parts of this well-fortified building. 1699 the Barons of Lincker and Lützewick began to convert the castle into a palace. After its time as common property it’s now again privately owned. Some years ago it was started to transform it into a health and sports park.

Mühle Denstedt | Tanja Kozica
The Denstedt Mill (Mühle Denstedt)

The first recorded mention of the mill dates back to 1170. Since then, the mill underwent a changeful history.
In 1613, the mill was almost completely destroyed by the “Thuringian Deluge”. For more than a century, it was apparently operated only to a very modest extent. In 1935, Dr. Rudolf Clauder acquired the mill, which today is still run by the third generation of his family. In order to meet the requirements of the times, the mill’ machinery was constantly updated. In addition to machines from the beginning of the last century, which are fully functional up to the present day, machines and equipment have been added that were developed only in recent years.

With his journalistic work and writings Wieland, the tutor of the Crown Prince Carl August Duke of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach paved the way for the Weimar classicism. In 1797, he bought the estate in Oßmannstedt and for almost 6 years it was his "island of happiness and peace", "free from all dependencies". Here, he welcomed his famous guests such as Anna Amalia, Goethe, Herder and Kleist. You will also find Wieland’s tomb on the grounds.
