From Eberstedt to Bad Sulza to the Mouth of the Ilm River | 14 km

After a break at the old oil mill in Eberstedt cycle down to Bad Sulza, a very popular spa town which is also renowned for its wines. You may meander through the spa gardens or spend some time in the pump room and the saline “Louise”.
The next part of the bike path leads through wine yards that run alongside the cycle path until it reaches the mouth of the Ilm River. You may either continue on the Saale bike path or you stop by. The winery “Zahn” boasts price-winning wines from the Saale-Unstrut region and a restaurant serving delicious food alongside their impressive wines. From the station, you can comfortably make your way back to Weimar. You can take your bicycle with you on the train..

Historic “Inhalatorium”

In 1902, the saline of Bad Sulza had already been in the possession of the Baron Beust family for 150 years. On the occasion of this anniversary the family donated a piece of land near the city park, today’s spa gardens, to the spa director. The planning of the construction of an Inhalatorium was given over to the master-builder Johann Anton Willkomm. Funds for the building were raised by means of share certificate sale. On 15 June 1903, the Inspector of Mines, A.L. Wunderwald, inaugurated the new building. Back then, the equipment and machines were technical and scientific state of the art and promised a most modern inhalatory therapy for respiratory diseases. The spa guests could make use of several inhalation rooms. The Inhalatorium was operated all throughout GDR times and after having been comprehensively reconstructed it was reopened in 1999 as “Historisches Inhalatorium”, comprising the tourist information centre, the public library and the principal office of the Association of the Spa Bad Sulza (Kurgesellschaft). When comparing then and now pictures of the building you will hardly notice any difference.

Pump Room

On 17 July 1910, the pump room was opened after about six months' construction time by the Counsellor of Health Schenk and Mayor Seidel. Johann Anton Willkomm was again the architect of this art-nouveau building. In the 1960s, the pump room was shut down and sank into oblivion. It is only since 2009, that, after extensive renovation work, the pump room has been used again by guests and visitors. Working closely together with the Historic Monuments Protection Authority Bad Sulza had the pump room restored to its original condition. Windows and doors, for example, are the very ones that had originally been built in back then in 1910. Today, the brine of the Carl-Alexander-Sophien-source may be tried here and be used for drinking cures. For this purpose, the brine is diluted with water to a salt content of 1%.

Toskana Therme | Foto: Stefan Hopf
Toskana Therme

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe already felt the cultural city of Weimar’s surroundings reminded him of the rolling hills and scenic vineyards of Tuscany and the Tuscan way of life. The thermal bath “Toskana Therme” offers a unique experience: the “Liquid Sound” in which one is immersed in a fascinating interplay of sound, light and colour. On three floors you will find a wide variety of opportunities for relaxation. A spacious sauna and spa park promote wellbeing and health. After the Toskana Therme had been classified an external EXPO-2000 project, the New York Times declared it as being one of the five best places in the world. The Stern (a German periodical) wrote: "Liquid Sound, flüssiger Klang - this is the attraction at Bad Sulza's hypermodern bathing temple. Pure relaxation for stressed-out souls."

Gradierwerk "Louise"

There were three Gradierwerke (a special kind of salt works) in Bad Sulza for more than 200 years. Even today, the Sulza Saline with its associated objects ranks among the largest preserved sites of its kind in Germany. 1754, the foundation stone was laid for the still functioning Gradierwerk "Louise" with the Zerstäuberhalle (a big room where the brine was diffused for inhalation) and ambulatory. Today, brine from the source "Johann Aricola" is used for the therapy of respiratory diseases.

Two Brine Towers

In 1893, a rock salt formation could be opened up in a depth of 900 m by drilling in a Darnsted field, thus allowing for the exploration of saturated brine. The two towers over the “Heinrich” and “Carl-Elisabeth” sources are the wooden witnesses of the former salt production. Right now, the towers are being restored and can therefore be looked at only from a distance.
